BIRD'S EYE VIEW OF BROADLAND WILDLIFE
30 April 2007

Visitors to RSPB Strumpshaw Fen, near Norwich, can enjoy a bird's-eye view of this enchanting nature reserve from the comfort of a spacious new tower hide.

The new hide is built on a platform three metres above ground, providing stunning views over the tranquil pools and reedbeds, which are home to a host of Broadland wildlife.

At this time of year, visitors can enjoy breath-taking views of marsh harriers performing their aerial courtship displays, hobbies hunting for dragonflies on the wing, great crested grebes carrying chicks on their backs, and ducks, swans, geese, coots and moorhens busily making nests and rearing young.

The official opening of the tower hide will take place on Thursday 3 May, when RSPB staff and volunteers will be joined by representatives from funders and partners Waste Recycling Environmental (WREN), Broadland District Council, and Natural England. Shaun Thomas, Regional Director for Natural England, will open the new hide with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The tower hide was built thanks to generous funding from WREN, which distributes landfill tax credits for Waste Recycling Group Ltd (WRG), Broadland District Council and a legacy bequest from Mrs Breese.

Tim Strudwick, site manager for the RSPB Mid Yare reserves, said, "The tower hide offers some of the most stunning views of Broadland habitat and wildlife in Norfolk. I'm sure it will be a highlight for most visitors to the area, whether they are birdwatchers, nature enthusiasts or simply enjoying a quiet walk in beautiful countryside. "
