The RSPB's Aren't birds brilliant! 2007 season launches

From amazing birds of prey, to spectacular seabirds, thousands of people will have the chance to get close to wild birds this summer with the RSPB.

Nearly half a million people across the UK enjoyed the spectacle of birds displaying, breeding and fledglings taking their first flight as part of the RSPB's Aren't birds brilliant! initiative in 2006. [note 1]

Puffins at Firth of Forth, Lake District ospreys, Ghosts of the forest - black grouse watch and Ardnamurchan golden eagles are just some of the amazing species under the spotlight this year. You'll also have the chance to get up close and personal with the world's fastest animal - the peregrine falcon.

Julian Hughes, the RSPB's Head of Species Conservation, said: "Birds of prey are beautiful and spectacular. They evoke a sense of wonder and awe in most of us. Through the RSPB's Aren't birds brilliant! scheme, we hope half a million people will get the chance to have magical encounters with these majestic birds.

"It's incredible to think that just a few years ago, only the privileged few would have seen them. In the past they have had mixed fortunes in the UK, some have faced years of struggle against extinction, such as red kites. There is much to celebrate as they have fought their way back from the brink; however, not all are out of the woods yet."

It's no coincidence that nearly two thirds of Aren't birds brilliant! sites feature birds of prey. The popularity of these amazing birds and their stories have inspired many organisations to dedicate time and effort to ensure birds of prey remain a sight to be admired and treasured.

Richard Bashford, Aren't birds brilliant! project manager, said: "This programme gives people the chance to witness the private lives of some of our most stunning wild birds. They're a great place to bring the whole family for a day out and with more than 60 sites across the UK, the 2007 season promises to give even more people the opportunity to discover fantastic wildlife."

Many of the schemes are run in partnership with other organisations and help bring thousands of pounds worth of tourism into the local community. Staff are on hand at all events to help visitors see and answer questions about the amazing birds and other local wildlife.

Richard added: "Most Aren't birds brilliant! schemes have top of the range binoculars and telescopes on site to make sure you get the perfect view. The projects provide great opportunities for day trips to the countryside, with many surrounded by great walks. "
